sorry for not posting for a while - we didn't mean to miss a month!
we've had lots going on and a few changes coming up.

this is what we have been doing over the last 4 weeks:

glenn broke his wrist
the cast came off last week but he still can't work yet
I cut the end of my finger off
(well a bit of it) it's healing now
making lantern orders
slower than usual (due to my finger)
posting off website orders
(thankyou for buying our work)
sorting out our stock room ....
organization finally
catching up on loads of paperwork
(glenn can't wait to get back to the workshop now!)
planning a new exhibition for early 2011 .....
we are really excited about it - details at a later date
finalized details with a couple of new stockists ....
details soon
and sorting out a few changes
more about that very soon too
and quite a bit more
but this list would get too long

wilson a. bentley - snowflakes

Wilson A. Bentley was the first person to capture the image
of a single snowflake with a camera

fascinated with snowflakes, Bentley rigged up a microscope
to a bellows camera and took images of individual snowflakes

the year was 1885 and the technology became known as
photomicrography

in 1931, Bentley's groundbreaking book "Snow Crystals", recorded
the beautiful designs and fragility of 2,500 snowflakes

"under the microscope, I found that snowflakes were miracles
of beauty; & it seemed a shame that this beauty should not
be seen & appreciated by others.
every crystal was a masterpiece of design, & no one design
was ever repeated.
when a snowflake melted, that design was forever lost."

a few weeks after his book was published, Wilson A. Bentley,
walking through a blizzard, caught pneumonia and died.

we have had a strange couple of weeks
and missing the snow a little now.
it made everything look bigger.

we've been busy with designs (mainly for commissions)
and tax returns (finally all finished), posting off orders
and talking to a couple of new interesting contacts about our work.

snowed in

we have been well and truly snowed in all week.

the sun is out this morning
so we think it's going to melt soon & we can
then attempt to get out of our steep snowy driveway.
we have a few orders that should be posted
so hopefully we can get to the post office today.

if we can't get out, glenn has to finish designs for commissions
and I have lantern orders to get done - it's too cold for the
workshop today, so we'll stack up the woodburner,
stay indoors & keep warm.

here is a little sneak peek at the photoshoot from the feb '10
issue of Country Homes & Interiors magazine -
the shoot took place back in oct '09 in a lovely house
in the cotswolds and our cornish slate & oak coffee table
was used, along with our reclaimed oak & slate lamp.
{a few other pieces of ours were used too - more details soon}

we hope you all had a beautiful xmas & new years

we didn't wake up to snow on xmas day like we wished for
but it did snow a little last night.
it's a beautiful sunny clear day here in Welcombe today
so most of the snow has melted already, oh well.

we have a busy 2010 planned, lots of new projects and
lots to tell you about!

the weekend

a huge thankyou to everyone that came to visit
us at the weekend.
we hadn't opened our studio at xmas time before
and were a little worried that if the weather
was bad we wouldn't get that many visitors.

but the sun came out and it was a lovely fresh winter weekend.
we made mince pies, little lemon biscuits &
orange with cinnamon bicsuits and mulled wine
which everyone enjoyed.

lots of xmas presents were brought - our leaf lanterns,
oak chopping/serving boards, reclaimed cornish slate mirrors,
oak tea-light blocks, reclaimed cornish slate clocks
& more - so we had a really successful weekend.

the xmas open studio was our last event of this year

our xmas open studio ..... so far

we thought we'd show you a few pictures we took yesterday
of our xmas open studio here in Welcombe.
it was a beautiful sunny winter's day, quite chilly but we
had plenty of mince pies, snowflake biscuits & mulled wine
to keep our visitors warm.

we were open yesterday until 6pm, so as it got dark we put
little candles in jars everywhere and a few faery lights here & there.
it looked quite magical.

this morning is just as sunny and we are making another
batch of mince pies & biscuits, the mulled wine will
be ready for 11am too.

we will be open until 4pm today

glenn's wish: emmeline hastings sculpture

another artist's work we saw at "wrapped up", when we went to
give The Devon Guild more of our mirror's,
was Emmeline Hastings stunning sculptures.

we both loved them, but Glenn spied them first and was
really taken with them - they looked beautifully fluid and light,
almost like tiny little feathers.

Emmeline's pieces are inspired by the visualisation
of sound and music - the sculptures are her interpretation
of hearing & feeling the vibrations of these sounds.

Using perspex, stainless steel and silver, Emmeline creates beautiful
tactile sculptures that give optical effects and the illusion of movement.

sammy's wish: pauline edie jewellery

I totally fell in love with Pauline Edie's jewellery when I was
looking online to see what other makers were putting work
in The Devon Guild's xmas exhibition "wrapped up".

I did a post about the exhibition {here} and had to mention
her work because it totally intrigued me when I came
across her website.

We delivered work for the exhibition and then, about a week
and a half later, got a call to say that most of our mirrors
had sold already. So we delivered a few more and got to
see the exhibition set up and Pauline's beautiful jewellery!

Inspired by childhood stories and illustrations, Pauline uses
porcelain, white precious metal, gold glaze and

oxidised precious metal for her brooches, rings,
bangles and neck pieces.
Some of her pieces have her sketches transferred onto the porcelain too.

I love the whole collection but I think my favourite piece
is the rapunzel's hair neck piece.

whenever we do a show or take work to an exhibition,
we always see beautiful handmade work from other
designer makers that we so want to buy.

we come back from a show or a gallery delivery and ask each other
what our favourite things were and what we would buy
(most of the time we love the same things)
and, sometimes,
if we are sneaky enough,
we buy each other a surprise gift from the show or gallery
while the other isn't looking.

so we thought we would share a few things from
our "wish lists" with you - hopefully they may even
give you a few ideas for xmas.

before we tell you a bit more about what we have been doing over the last week or two, and give you details about our 1st ever xmas open studio (next weekend) - we wanted to say a few thankyou's for the press we have had lately.

a two week blur

gosh, what happened to the last 2 weeks - it's all a blur! We have been so busy with shows and exhibitions and deliveries and making work .... and driving! We have been to Surrey, London, Bath, Warminster, Bovey Tracey, Bristol and everywhere inbetween it seems. This is the first chance we have had to sit down and post on the blog what we have been doing. Lots to catch up on and tell you about.

First things first - thanks to everyone that came to see us in Chiswick at British Contemporary Crafts. There were some amazing designer makers there and we met some really lovely people but were a little disappointed at the number of visitors (maybe the awful rain on Sunday put people off). Thankfully, during the quiet bits of the show, we had Sue, Michelle, Megan, Nic and Jackie, and Jessica to chat to.

we also managed to deliver a few pieces to customers, inbetween the London show and taking work to galleries for xmas exhibitions - we took one of our square reclaimed oak coffee tables to a customer in Surrey and delivered a beautiful full length reclaimed slate mirror commission we made for a customer near Bath. It's always nice to see where our pieces are going.

Had a flying stop in Bath mainly for food, to visit the Toast shop and also one of our favourite furniture shops (tell you about that another time). Then sped home via Bristol (where I snapped a few abstract shots of the Clifton suspension bridge which looks beautiful all lit up at night).

The Devon Guild of Craftsmen's xmas exhibition opens this Saturday.
Wrapped Up showcases some of the best makers of
contemporary craft in the uk and focuses on selling
hand-made high quality small batch pieces
and unique one-offs.

we were delighted to be asked to exhibit as part of
this years exhibition - along with some smaller pieces,
we have a beautiful new sculptural slate mirror in the exhibition,
and our oak and dark grey steel bench.

There is work in this exhibition from over 50 makers,
from jewellery, ceramics, textiles, mixed media & more,
including Claire Loder, Margo Selby, Teresa Green ....
and lots more.

makers gallery xmas exhibition

we have the Art Bazaar show coming up this Friday
but before that we have to deliver work to
Makers Gallery in Taunton for their xmas exhibition.

we were asked to be one of their guest artists for
the exhibition which opens this Saturday (14th nov)

Makers is a lovely co-operative gallery in Bath Place in Taunton

art bazaar

our 1st xmas show this year is the prestigious one day event, Art Bazaar, at the Assembly Rooms in South Molton on the 13th November. There will be art, craft & design work for sale by over 50 professional artists and designer makers from the North Devon region. This will be our first time at Art Bazaar so we are really looking forward to it. We will have a selection of work for sale including our reclaimed cornish slate clocks & mirrors in various sizes, our delicate leaf lanterns (perfect for xmas!), oak chopping boards and tea-lights, our off-set oak full length mirrors and oak & slate lamps, and a couple of pieces of furniture too. The show will be open from 12noon to 9pm, with many of the local shops in South Molton staying open for the evening too.

We asked the organiser of the event, Stella, to send us a list of the other artists taking part so we could let you know what other beautiful work will be available to buy at the show. Here are a few of our favourites:

we have alot in common with our friend Paul when it comes
to our attitude towards creating work, how it's created
and what materials are used.

we share a passion for old, salvaged oak with
holes and cracks and rusty nails -

the last week has sort of felt a little like the calm
before the storm for us, even though we have still
been pretty busy & working hard -
it's just that any minute now it's going to get hectic,
really hectic.

the 3 months lead up to xmas is always busy for us,
making work for galleries, exhibitions & shows,
fitting in commissions, delivering work,
sourcing materials, designing mail outs,
applying for summer shows (in winter!) .......
....... the list goes on ......

busy busy busy
and it's getting dark so early now

but we did manage to sit down and have a look through
our copy of Simple Home,
the new book by Mark & Sally Bailey

the book is full of beautiful images by Debi Treloar,
perfectly calming & serene, just what we need right now.
there are some lovely pictures of Parma Lilac, the stunning
house and showroom of Jamie Jackson
(we haven't been there yet, but would love to).

woodfair: part 2

Woodfair was set in the grounds at Larmer Tree Gardens in Dorset
and we managed to wander around them one evening after the
show had closed and also early in the morning before it opened to
take some pictures.

the place is so beautiful and I did get a little obsessed by the
lovely little tower that was covered in orange/pink lichens ....
it seemed to change colour depending on the light.
the floor inside had a lovely mosaic & the ceiling was stunning,
like a sculptured sun.

if you get a chance to visit the gardens, you must.

woodfair: part 1

as promised we thought we would show you some images that we
took at Woodfair. The setting was beautiful ... (more about
Larmer Tree Gardens in the next part) and we saw some beautiful
sunsets .... and rain clouds.

we had very mixed feelings about the show and it didn't help that
we had to set up in the rain and mud.
there was some great stuff at the show, lots of conservation stands
and some lovely traditional old crafts still being practiced, but the
shopping marque that we were in wasn't reserved just for
designer makers with their own original ideas, designs
and work unfortunately.

there were a handful of stands that were good, like
Jonathan Garratt with his beautiful terracotta pots & tableware,
and our friend David Baker had new work on show, but most of the
stands were traditional woodwork rather than original design.

we enjoyed meeting Terry and his son Lee from Dorset Coppicing Ltd
who made some really lovely traditional work, like besom brooms
and the old fashioned tent pegs, ect.

despite the weather we still had a good show.
we caught up with some old friends, chatted to some lovely people,
made a few new contacts & sold out of lanterns.

our first show this autumn is Cranborne Chase Woodfair
at the beautiful Larmer Tree Gardens in Dorset.

the show is this weekend - saturday 10th & sunday 11th october
and is open from 10am to 5pm both days.

we will be showing a range of our furniture & accessories
including coffee tables, mirrors & clocks, lamps & lanterns,
chopping boards & more.

we have never been to Larmer Tree Gardens before but from
the images we have seen, they look stunning
(fingers crossed for lovely sunshine).

to green wood workers, sustainable living exhibitors to basket makers,

another busy week

It's feeling very autumnal around here which, as long as
the sun stays out, is fine and always looks beautiful here in Devon.

we've had another busy busy week and now it's the weekend
and that beautiful autumn sunshine has turned to wind and rain.
let's hope the sun returns for next weekend as we will be at a show
(more about that in the next post).

we got lots done this week:
we finally got all our gallery deliveries done,
took some of our furniture & accessories to another magazine
photo shoot -again in the Cotswolds
(more about that when the mag comes out),
and met up with the Love Factor gang to discuss another exhibition.

Glenn has been getting work ready for the show and I have been
making lanterns and getting our autumn & winter mail outs ready.
And we managed to clear a space at the back of our barn
ready for our winter wood stack (thanks to jackie & andy).

yew tree gallery

on our sort of day off, on thursday, we also popped into one
of our favourite galleries in Cornwall, the Yew Tree Gallery.

the road out of St.Ives toward St.Just is beautiful and the gallery
is just past Morvah, with sea views on one side and
the stunning Penwith Moors on the other side.

the gallery is a lovely space and the exhibitions are always good.

we totally fell in love with Michael Sheppard's beautiful paintings which
had been framed perfectly in slightly worn looking gold frames.
(I wish I could have bought one).

His next exhibition is at the Open Space Galleries in Penryn
which opens on the 9th october to 3rd november.

porthmeor artists studios

whenever we go to St.Ives, we always walk along Porthmeor beach
and look at this amazing building and dream about what it's like inside.
it houses Porthmeor artists studios, the St.Ives School of painting and
the local fishermens cellars, but we had never been inside .....
until thursday.

we had just missed all the other open studios but one was still open,
so we had a really nice chat with artist Iain Robertson who
shares one of the studios with his wife Clare Wardman.

the studios are beautiful but decaying and desperately need to be saved
from falling into the sea, basically. 3.7 million pounds is needed and
the artists, fishermen and the architect are interested in
restoring the buildings rather than altering them.

there was an exhibition in one of the other studios that we visited too
in which all the resident artists had given a piece of work to raise
money for the restoration.
the buildings have been here for over 150 years, used by both
fishermen and artists such as Ben Nicholson and Francis Bacon
and it would be such a shame if they weren't saved.

a sort of day off

we had a really nice day on thursday.
we had to deliver some work to a gallery in St.Ives, so decided
to spend the day in that part of Cornwall.

We were really lucky to catch the end of some open studios
going on in St.Ives, in a building that we have yearned to
look inside for the longest time - more about that in the next post.
And we stopped in at one of our favourite galleries, a little further on
down the coast, to see their latest exhibition
(more about that soon too).

the rest of our day was spent on one of our
favourite beaches - relaxing, reading, surfing - and it felt
like summer (not the rainy kind).

and we saw a beautiful sunset on the beach near St.Michael's Mount
and the twinkling lights of Penzance.

not bad for a sort of day off.

the other exhibition that we went to see at the weekend was
the preview of William Peer's first 30 sculptures from his
new work 100 days: sketches in marble

we have known Wim & Sophie for a while now and have made a
couple of pieces of furniture for them in the past.
they live not far from us in a beautiful old house and the sculptures
looked perfect exhibited there.
it was a lovely informal preview, with tea & cakes & autumn sunshine.

Wim's idea for the series is to make a sculpture every day for 100 days.

Zoe Hyde & Dawn Dupree at the Thelma Hulbert Gallery

Zoe and Dawn are exhibiting together for the first time
at the Thelma Hulbert Gallery in Honiton.
Zoe produces beautiful contemporary paintings and
Dawn is a textile artist producing canvases as well as a
domestic range including beautiful cushions.

We managed to see the exhibition just before the gallery closed
for the day on Saturday - well, actually, it had just gone 4pm when we
arrived but they so kindly opened up again for us so we
could have a quick look.

Zoe is based in Cornwall and Dawn is in London so both are influenced
by very different surroundings, yet their work has similarities in
terms of their subject matter, the way they work and their use of colour.

The exhibition runs until 24th October 09.

it feels very much like autumn this morning
the last little flower on our orchid is now all papery
so I took a polaroid of it before it died

we are working on a few new designs for commissions too at the

it's august already - and today is the 2nd day of our open studio, our last summer show.

not quite sure where the last 2 weeks have gone ...........
it's all a blur of people coming to visit, looking through old memories,
taking ella to leopallooza, catching up with orders,
getting the studio ready, an interview for a magazine,
glenn grabbing a surf when he can, flicking through new books that
arrived, applying for xmas shows and exhibitions,

we have admired the work of Jerome Abel Seguin for a long time.

roots, trunks, branches, vines - roughly cut, polished or bleached
become monumental sculptures and furniture.

and the house that he built on Sumbawa, using traditional materials, is simply beautiful.

there is a little tiny bit about us in the Made in Devon section of this months DevonLife magazine - it features our latest coffee table, a low reclaimed oak and black steel table.

we will be showing this table at our studio in 2 weeks time if you want to come & have a look.

our new oak mirrors

our new oak full-length mirrors are made up of lots of different pieces of reclaimed oak, different sizes and thicknesses, with some being slightly darker than others and with nice burrs and markings. We select the pieces from off-cuts or pieces too short to use for furniture and they are planed and sanded to fit together perfectly for these mirrors.

if you came to the private view or the first day of The Contemporary Craft Fair at Bovey Tracey you might have seen the first 2 we had made, but they both sold straight away and we hadn't had a chance to photograph them. We have now made another one and taken some images for you to see.

we will be adding them to our collection of accessories on our website soon and will have them for sale at our next event - Welcombe Open Studios 09.

we've known Chris for a while now, ever since he shared a pottery in Hartland and obviously from shows and exhibitions. We really like his work and are lucky enough to own a few pieces - we have one of his lovely vases and a set of mugs too.

his work is made from white earthenware clay & decorated with colourful slips.
We love the simplicity of the markings, the fluidity, the japanese influence.

his range includes bowls, mugs and vases.

Welcombe Open Studios 09

Our last event of the summer is the much anticipated Welcombe Open Studios 09, now in it's 4th year and with more artists taking part this year than ever before. 9 artists will be opening their studios around our lovely village of Welcombe on the North Devon coast and there will also be 2 mixed exhibitions as part of the event.

This year we have decided to hold the event over 2 weekends: weekend 1 is over 3 days - 7th to 9th August, and weekend 2 is over 4 days - 28th to 31st August. So if you miss the 1st weekend, you have another chance at the end of the month to visit some of the studios. Alot of the artists taking part only open their studios for this event so it's a great chance to get an exclusive peek into where & how their work is created.

The website for the event is http://www.welcombearts.wordpress.com/ and is where you will find all the details you need to find Welcombe and all the studios, open times, artists contact details, etc.

New artists this year include poet & artist John Moat who will be showing collections of his poems, novels, short stories and limited editions, as well as paintings, prints and etchings. Our new neighbour Tom Hyde will have work on display which include his sculptures in wood, prints and silver jewellery. Rick Hall will be opening his studio for the first time as part of the event showing new paintings and work in progress - his beautiful studio is set in a lovely wooded area of Welcombe and is a must see for visitors.

Also new for this year is a mixed exhibition at The Yarner Trust showing work from makers of furniture, paintings & poetry, mosaics, willow & rush baskets and textiles and a creative painting exhibition in the village hall of Rosina Lytton's work and work by her students.

Other studios open are photography by Paul Jenner - paintings, drawings and ceramics by Rebecca Cohen - textiles & paintings by Jean Goodchild - raku & earthenware pottery by David Westcott - oil paintings and watercolours by Wendy Chiles - and contemporary furniture & accessories by us.

We will have furniture on display, mirrors and clocks from reclaimed cornish slate, new oak mirrors, leaf lanterns and gold leaf bowl lanterns, tea-light blocks, ash & oak chopping/serving boards, oak and slate lamps and some 2nd's & old stock at reduced prices. As well as the 11 different studios to visit, Kings Cottage Nursery will be opening their beautiful gardens over the 2 weekends (closed Saturdays) for visitors and plant sales and The Old Smithy Inn will be open for lunch & dinner. There will also be another exhibition in the village hall starting 29th August of Gabrielle Goodchild's beautiful etchings & paintings as part of the Drawn to the Valley open studios event (more details here). And, of course, you must check out the beach at Welcombe Mouth.
